Chapter Twenty-Eight

“Where are you headed?” Charity asked as she cornered Ellis in the kitchen of Angelo’s.

Ellis retrieved the Yule log and berry chocolates from the employee refrigerator where he’d stashed them twenty-four hours ago. Though no one commented on it, he was sure the staff all noticed his sullen mood. As far as he knew, no one had heard from Soliel. Present company included.

“I’m going to her house. The packages are a perfect excuse.”

“I’ll bet they are. And if she doesn’t want to see you?”

His fingers tightened around the smaller box, the sides collapsing as Charity’s hand over his encouraged him to loosen his grip before he ruined the contents. “At least I‘ll know she’s safe. That’s my primary concern right now. Even if she opts to never speak to me again, I’ll at least know I tried and that she...”

“She’s fine Ellis.”

“I’m not so sure. She has health concerns and I think stress is a trigger. If she didn’t go home and hasn’t taken her medication, she could be...”

“She’s not. Trust me. I feel it. Soliel is fine; she just needs some time.”

“I have to try,” he said on the edge of defeat.

“I know. Just,” Charity fidgeted with a discarded meat tenderizer from the table. “Don’t get your hopes up.”

“You really think I did it this time?”

“I don’t know. I mean, I know what it looked like, and I can only imagine what went through her head when she saw you two.”

“But why did she run off? We’d just had a great time at The Naughty Chocolatier. I felt like we were finally connecting.”

Charity looked up at him and Ellis couldn’t help but notice the pity in her eyes. Was he that naive? Did he not know women like he thought he did? Granted, the whole scenario with his ex-wife had caught him entirely off guard. But as far as he knew, no one saw that level of crazy coming. Denise flipped overnight, going from doting wife and mother to psychopath without so much as a warning.

“Are you sure you read her right?” Charity finally asked.

“Yes. You can even ask Tiffany. She,” he lowered his head, blushing, though it probably wasn’t obvious with his darker skin, “walked in on us.”

Charity raised an eyebrow.

“We were fully clothed,” he added assuredly, “but she definitely interrupted an intimate moment.”

“All the more reason for Soliel to run out. One minute you two are sharing an intimate moment, the next you’re hugged up with Marcel.”

“I wasn’t hugged up with her.” Ellis stopped himself, reigning his anger in. Or maybe it was frustration. If Soliel had confronted him, given him the opportunity to clarify instead of assuming, none of this would be happening. “I was showing her how to properly roll out the fondant.”

Charity returned the metal tenderizer to the spot she’d picked it up from, her attention now squarely on Ellis, “Your relationship with Soliel is still in its infancy. And you said it yourself, she’s newly divorced. Even the smallest infraction can be amplified by the newness of it all.
